50 candles
An afternoon in 1966, when Yves Saint Laurent dared to present the first female version of the tuxedo, burst upon him a storm of criticism. It happened in the No. 5 Avenue Marceau (Paris), surrounded by a stunned audience. At that time, no one foretold that this “crazy” idea will become a classic that today turns 50.
Bianca Jagger, Catherine Deneuve, Liza Minnelli and Lauren Bacall were the first to wear a tuxedo; helping to position it as a well-known piece. Today, the top Cara Delevingne takes up the baton, being the perfect ambassador who triumphs in social networks. The digital era dictates trend and, with it, the star invention of the famous couturier.
“For women, the tuxedo is an essential wardrobe piece because it is style, not fashion. Fashion comes and goes, but style is forever”. With these words, Yves Saint Laurent defended a decision that revolutionized the fashion world: to adapt to the woman that garment created in 1865 by Henry Poole, the Savile Row tailor, for the prince of Wales.
Despite initial criticism, Yves´ particular tuxedo had a great acceptance among the youngest people and Catherine Deneuve, his first public ambassador, got the fashion world surrendered at his feet. Half century later, these two pieces have become a guarantee of style and an imperishable trend. Happy 50th birthday!
